Calculating dates

December 30, 2005

This morning on the George Noory show (which I tune into just for the dumb fuck callers) there was a real gem. This guy called up and started by saying that its been a long time since he was in a classroom so he couldn’t remember how you get from a BC year to an AD year.

He asked “if the people in the BC years counted backwards down to the birth of Christ?”. Ah Mr. Dumb Fuck, that would mean that they knew when Jesus was to be born!

This is the ABT iJet two-way RF transmitter remote for the iPod. There are a slew of remote controls out for the iPod, but this one really takes the cake for one primary reason. It has a

An Innovative iPod Accessory? OMG! – Gizmodo.

Heres an idea, why not put some memory and circuitry into the remote controller so that it can play music. Add a headset and you have an iAwayPod for when you are away from your iMotherShipPod.

I know, I know, this is only for when you want to play the iPod thru your home stereo and you are across the room. But don’t you think some dorks are going to carry their iPod in one pocket and the remote in another?

And think about how stupid this idea is. You are the one who puts all the music on your iPod in the first place, I would think that, unlike a XM radio, you don’t really need to check what the track and artiste is. Seriously, does anyone really read the screen when you are in play mode. Doesn’t that defeat one of the purposes of a portable music player? I say that most people use the display to navigate but once you hit ‘play’ its pretty much in auto-pilot mode.

Backup blogs

December 26, 2005

As far as possible, all my posts at Random Signs of Intelligence will be cross posted to my two backup blogs at Brain Park and Utter @ LiveJournal. These are just old accounts that I haven’t used in a long time but now with BlogJet’s ability to post simultaneously to multiple accounts, I figure I might as well have alternatives in case Blogspot is ever down. Please disregard any previous posts on these other blogs where I might have said that I will no longer be posting there\here.

The new version 1.6 of BlogJet has a new feature that enables group posting – posting to multiple blogs simultaneously. You can also create different multiple groups, so you have say a technology group that posts to certain blogs while a politics group posts to certain other blogs.

Most bloggers will simply have a blog or two and may not find this feature too useful. But it can be used to post to a ‘backup blog’, a secondary location that is a mirror of your primary blog (in terms of content at least) but hosted on a seperate service. So in case your primary is down for some reason, you can direct people to the secondary location. Ad if you have domain redirection, thats works just perfect!

Stiff by Mary Roach

December 26, 2005

Though not ‘uproariously funny’ as some reviewer wrote, it is pretty light and really interesting. I had only a vague notion or no idea at all of all the uses of human cadavers and the history of such usage.

And if you are squimish, you need not fear; the author has done a great job of making the book a relatively light read – not at all morbid or disrespectful.

BTW, this is where I got the spark for my last post about head transplants.

Story Idea: Head Transplants

December 25, 2005

Story idea for a sci-fi novel; in the future, mankind is able to perform complete head transplants, where the head of people who can afford such things, is transplanted onto a healthy donor body. Though they are suppose to use the bodies of brain-dead donors, that is not always the case.

The head continues to age as normal and along with the transplant, various types of cosmetic procedures are performed on the face. As the rich and powerful get to their 2nd or third body, the brain in no great shape and the face is naturally showing signs of extereme age and countless cosmetic surgery, but the bodies are those of fine young men and women.

Humans reared for their bodies? Kidnapping of people to sell to the head-transplant underworld? Cloned bodies to be used by the original head?

A young woman who was horrifically burnt in an acid attack almost a year ago finally has a full head of hair again.

BBC NEWS | Health | ‘I have a head of hair again’.

And kudos to her finance who is still going ahead with the marriage after she has been horrifically disfigured.

Archery

December 23, 2005

I think I would like to learn archery. It should be fun to shoot pointy sticks into things.

Many moons

December 23, 2005

Yes, it has been many moons since I last posted here. A lot of things going on at work – none any good, I am afraid. Anyway, this is like a master catching up post where I will try and put down all the damn post-ideas and thoughts I have been carrying around in my brain.

Rome

Awesome! Don’t miss it! I watched the first season on HBO On-Demand but they don’t have it there anymore. Anyway, if they rerun it or DVDs come out, this is a must see.

I espically like the way they have scaled everything down – none of those grand buildings or anything. Even Egypt and Cleopatra are all human-sized. Also, Rome has a real gritty feel to it and some of the stuff about life in ancient Rome are quite fascinating.

There was one scene where this guy goes to the courts to try and hire a lawyer. The lawyers were sitting outside on makeshift tables; just like you would find today outside any court building in India.

Christmas

Blah! What a load of crap! Even the music makes you want to shop. There is nothing religious about the holiday anymore – its just one big shopping orgy!

Competitive Eating

This has got to be one of the most disgustingly arrogant sport (if you can call it that) in the world. Just watch one of these events where the people are stuffing more food into each face than it needs to feed an entire family in a 3rd world country. Just picture that fat fuck next to one of the millions of starving kids all over the world!

Overweight

And speaking of competitive eating, I am really getting FAT! I have to do something, and fast! But will all the crap going on at work right now, food makes me feel good – I medicate myself with it. I have been trying to stay away from the ol’ whiskey and have been successful at it – this week at least ;)

Blogjet v1.6

The new version of BlogJet is out. I was using the beta for quite some months so I am pretty family with the new features. The Flickr integration is nice but needs some work, its too slow and a pain to use if you want to find a particular picture out a library of 100s of pics like I have. I love the built in ping feature! Overall, a good upgrade. I would love to see some additional editing controls like being able to make headings without having to scoot over to the Code tab. All in all, its my favorite blog editor.

Work

Crap like you won’t believe. The company is going through the grinder right now and its not going to survive too much longer. The Big Cheese is literally losing it in front of our eyes. Its all quite funny and tragic at the same time. Such a waste; we had the resources to do something big, but it was all blown on vacations, toys, and medication.
