PHB, can’t live without them, can’t kill them! What’s a guy to do?

Why blog about it, of course! Enjoy, but don’t tell my boss!

Firefox 1.5 and Extensions

November 30, 2005

I upgraded my prime machine to Firefox 1.5 – I’ve been using it on my secondary and casual machines for a few days and it seems pretty stable and tight. Naturally, a bunch of my extensions have stopped working, and I am going present a quick rundown of those extensions and workarounds if any. I know I can change the internal version number for extension which will trick Firefox into letting them all run, and maybe I will do that, but not just yet.

del.icio.us One-Click Delete 0.2 – Blah! Never worked for me anyway!

PasswordMaker 0.8.7 – I don’t remember ever using it and besides, if I really really need it, I have its web-version bookmarked.

IE View 1.2.7 – I’ve got IE Tab 1.0.6.4 which works so I really don’t need IE View. IE View allows you to open up a link in IE while IE Tab runs an IE session imbedded in a FF tab.

PrefBar 3.2.1 – Hmm, I wonder what that did?

SessionSaver 0.2 – Yikes! I need that one, will check to see if I can hack a workaround.

EverNote Web Clipper 1.0.0.24 – Need this too, though I think I might be able to live without it for a bit.

Bookmark All 1.1.1 – Used this extensively but I can do the same by right clicking the tab area and clicking on Bookmark All; I don’t know where that comes from but hey, it works and even lets me name the Bookmark folder, unlike Bookmark All. Goodbye old friend.

Aardvark 1.0 – Didn’t use this much except on the rare occasion when I went over to TimeOfIndia.com. But I have Nuke Anything Enhanced 0.53 so that solves that problem. Bye-bye Aardvark (even though I liked the way you outlined the object in a red box).

Screen grab! 0.6 – Never used it. Can always use trusty old SnagIt and upload using the Flickr upload tool.

Feedview 0.9.8 – Use Bloglines all the time so don’t really need this.

BlogJetThis! 0.4 – I’m sure Dimtry will have this updated shortly. Besides I don’t use it much on account of the fact that each time you use it, it fires off a new instance of BlogJet.

ChromEdit 0.1.1.1 – Nice to have but not essential. Besides, a real man would use a real editor, like UltraEdit!

Minimize to Tray 0.0.1.2005080907+ – Need that! Or maybe the Firefox gang now has this built in natively. Looks like something everyone would want. And what’s with the version number? Update: I can use my TaskSwitch XP Pro 2.0 utility as a workaround.

Scribe 0.21 – Never used it.

Flashblock 1.3.2 – Need this! Need this bad!

Bookmarks Synchronizer 1.0.1 – Use this quite often. But maybe its a sign from God telling me to totally commit to del.icio.us.

Spurl 0.35 – Dropped Spurl in favor of Del.icio.us many moons ago.

Greasemonkey 0.5.3 – Need this, but only for the Delete button in GMail. There is a .xpi version of this script, maybe that will work under 1.5. Update: The .xpi version works for 1.5 so its all good.

Download Embedded 0.1 – Recent addition and never used it. So I won’t miss it.

Menu Editor 1.2 – Used this to rationalize the menu after Download All was installed, so I guess I don’t really need it.

Slogger 0.5.11 – Never used it. The idea is always to leave no trace behind, not create tons of it!

Scrumptious 1.1 – Never used it

SUV Owners

November 30, 2005

The world is full of things to hate, why do injustice to any one thing by lumping it with everything else. Therefore, I decided to start spin-off blogs on things I really hate. Also, these have to be things that I can post about everyday and since I drive everyday, I am constantly confronted with one of the most disgusting things under the sun, the SUV owner.

Now, lots of people hate SUVs but I feel one must give scorn where scorn is due, the owner. After all, all those natural resources that went into making and operating an SUV did not choose to be squandered this way, they were forced into it, like slave-prostitution victims!

So, without furthur ado, I present you with my new blog, SUV Owners Suck!

Please visit, comment and enjoy. And remember, if you see a SUV owner down on his luck, kick her in the spleen!

Wal-mart

November 29, 2005

I was at Walmart recently (I took a wrong turn, okay!) and was checking out the cheap DVD Recorders. A woman next to me was picking out a stereo for some guy and was talking. At first I thought she might be on the phone but later realized that she was a kook (genuine Wlamart customer) and was talking to herself. She was actually vocalizing everything she was thinking!

I got out of there as fast as I could and even showered when I got home. That’s how I feel if I go to Walmart these days. BTW, I have shopped Walmart.com and got some sweet deals, like a $198 Garmin GPS that really rocks!

Adieu Thunderbird

November 28, 2005

I tried. And though I love its stable-mate Firefox, Thunderbird just didn’t cut it for me. I have been using Thunderbird ever since it was first released but now I have to let it go.

For one thing, there just instead the kind of integration you get for Outlook from various suites and tools like Office, etc. I love Plaxo, but the Plaxo extension for Thunderbird sucks! For the past many months I have been doing without any kind of syncing between my email application and online Plaxo database.

And all the contacts, tasks and notes syncing software for iPods and the like work with Outlook (pratically) seamlessly. Other than that, you have to get down and dirty if you want to move stuff between Thunderbird and anything.

Plus, everyone here at work uses those damn scheduling emails and Outlook calendars. I am a rebel, but sometimes even rebels have to rest.

So, farewell Thunderbird. Hopefully someday you will grow the kind of muscle that Outlook has.

Its interesting how the absense of color can change something so mundane as hair dyeing to something out of a horror movie. It looks like the hand is blodd stained and is reaching for the unsuspecting victim’s neck.

Also, she seems to be smoking. This could be a visual for an anti-smoking campaign; how deaths hand reaches for you when you smoke.

I’m all about Flickr today.

What do you think of this pic? Boy, using my new DSLR is a lot of work! Very satisfying. The possibilities are endless.

I like this picture, I forget the name of the building, but its on the Princeton University campus. I like the way the setting sun hits the tower and the flag. And the way the branches seem to be trying to grab the building. But enough of blowing my horn.

Besides, as with all hacky alleged-art, which is proably what this picture is anyway ;) , one can always word an appreciation that makes it sound like its the greatest thing since, since, that last picture.

Planting a Journal

November 27, 2005

I wonder if other married men out there have ever done this, I am sure someone proably already has. Anyway, this is an idea I got this morning while I was on my ‘throne’ (shitter).

I bought a couple of journals yesterday because I have always wanted to write a journal, old school style. Also, becuase I love stationary. Anyhoo, I was wondering how I could keep a honest and truthful journal and make sure that nobody, i.e. spouse, gets their hands on it. I would think that just telling them nt to read it is the surest way of making sure they will read it. I know I would have no qualms about reading someone’s private journal.

So then it occured to me that I could use this to my advantage. What if I plant a journal, filled with bogus entries about things I want er \ them to read! Brilliant, right? Sneaky I admit but I told her even before we were married that I am very devious.

The Vacuum cleaner

November 27, 2005

We’ve owned the current vaccum cleaner for proably a year now, maybe even more. Yesterday, the old spouse decided to clean behind and under the bed. She did not know how to convert the vacuum cleaner to hose-mode. Hmm, at tells you how much effort is devoted to dusting and cleaning around here.

I think half my stress would disappear if the family would just keep the house clean and orderly! The other half of my stress would go away if either I found a better job or the owners of the company I work for went on a permanent vacation. Whats the difference, they are out 4–5 times a year anyway!
